The Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU, adopted on 25 October 2012

This Directive establishes a common framework of measures for the promotion of energy efficiency within the Union in order to ensure the achievement of the Union's 2020 20 % headline target on energy efficiency and to pave the way for further energy efficiency improvements beyond that date.

More than 40% of the energy consumption is used in buildings. Recent reports show evidence that the tendency towards more performant energy low buildings (more insulation, better airtightnress, light construction) also increases the risk of having more indoor overheating problems. Solar shading is a passive solution that can avoid or reduce drastically the need for active cooling.
